Scam victims to receive refunds

The Federal Trade Commission will be sending a $104.09 check to 360 consumers who were victims of Briggs & Baker, a company that bilked people into buying their bogus debt negotiation services. The company’s ads “were false and misleading,” the FTC wrote in a press release. “As a result of purchasing (Briggs & Baker’s) debt negotiation services, consumers’ credit ratings suffered, their total debt increased, and some consumers even became the target of legal action.”

Reader: No joy in election process; voters earn right to be apathetic

READERS: There is no better topic to get folks fired up than politics.

Last Wednesday, I took primary non-voters to task, criticizing them for not going to the polls. Only 23 percent voted.

Many readers responded to the column (Shame on those too lazy and apathetic to vote, Aug. 25).
