There’s been an interesting trend with polling this week: As Mitt Romney has taken command in the Florida Republican presidential primary surveys, Newt Gingrich has surged in the national polls.
Generally speaking, national polls lag behind state polls, particulary if that state is holding an upcoming  primary. The reason is that voters in that state are much more engaged with the process than the nation as a whole.
That’s why the Florida polls on average show Mitt Romney with an 8-9 point advantage over Newt Gingrich, who leads the national surveys by a similar margin, thanks to his resounding victory in South Carolina last Saturday.
If the Florida polls hold true and Romney wins the Sunshine State by close to double-digits on Tuesday, expect the national polls to move favorably in his direction.
