Polls: Romney poised for victory

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

The stars, and the polls,  appear to be aligned for a convicing victory by Mitt Romney in the Florida Republican presidential primary on Tuesday.

Six polls have been released over the past two days and each one shows Romney with a lead over rival Newt Gingrich, ranging  from 5 to 20 points. An average of the polls finds  Romney in front by a commanding 13 percent (41.7-28.7 percent).

The evidence is clear: With all the polls in agreement and Romney’s margin growing each day, it’s difficult, if not impossible,  to see how Gingrich can prevail at this point.

Public Policy Polling: Romney 39 percent, Gingrich 31, Rick Santorum 15, Ron Paul 11.

Quinnipiac: Romney 43, Gingrich 29, Santorum 11, Paul 11.

Sufflolk: Romney 47, Gingrich 27, Santorum 12, Paul 9.

Insider Advantage: Romney 36, Gingrich 31, Santorum 12, Paul 12.

Rasmussen: Romney 44, Gingrich 28, Santorum 12, Paul 10.

Survey USA: Romney 41, Gingrich 26, Santorum 12, Paul 12.

Conflicting polling

Monday, January 30th, 2012

While two polls released late last night show Newt Gingrich cutting Mitt Romney’s lead in the Florida Republican presidential primary to single digits, a Suffolk Univeristy poll out today finds the opposite. Suffolk gives Romney an enormous  20-point advantage.
There’s several factors at work here.  Polling primary voters can be problematic because support for candidates tends to be soft and prone to wild swings. Basically, a pollster must model the electorate’s demographics to determine who is going to vote. In a primary where voter turnout tends to be low, figuring out who is going to vote and for which candidate can be an inexact science.

Suffolk University: Romney 47 percent, Gingrich 27, Rick Santorum 12, Ron Paul 9.

Polls: A Gingrich surge?

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Two polls taken Sunday and released late tonight show a small  bounce for Newt Gingrich in the Florida Republican presidential primary.

Public Policy Polling (PPP) and Insider Advantage find Gingrich narrowing Mitt Romney’s lead before Tuesday’s vote. Romney leads by 7  points in the PPP poll and 5 in the Insider Advantage survey.

It’s too early to say if these polls are indicative of a Gingrich surge or merely a blip on the radar. Polls released today have been all over the map, with Romney leading by as much as 16 points and as few as 5.

At this point, we need more information and will wait for additional polls to be released Monday to make a determination if there is a real Gingrich trend.

Tonight’s late polls:

Public Policy Polling: Romney 39 percent, Gingrich 32, Rick Santorum 14, Ron Paul 11.

Insider Advantage: Romney 36, Gingrich 31, Santorum 12, Paul 12.

Romney widens lead

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

A surging MItt Romney continues to expand his lead over Newt Gingrich in the Florida Republican presidential primary, according to polls released today.

In the three latest surveys, the former Massachusetts governor leads by 11 points in the Mason-Dixon poll, 15 in the NBC News/Marist and 16 in the Rasmussen.

Romney, who trailed Gingrich early last week, is now poised to take Florida’s 50 delegates in Tuesday’s winner-take-all primary with a landslide victory.

The factors behind the Romney surge are speculative, but anecdotal information suggests that two strong debate performances, a sizeable money advantage and successfully tying Gingrich to failed mortgage giant Freddie Mac turned the tide in his favor.

As for Gingrich, he did receive an enthusiastic endorsement from former presidential candidate Herman Cain on Saturday. But it remains to be seen if Cain’s support provides Gingrich with a much-needed bounce in the polls.

Today’s polls:

Mason-Dixon: Romney 42 percent, Gingrich 31, Santorum 14, Paul 6.

NBC News/Marist: Romney 42, Gingrich 27, Santorum 16, Paul 11.

Rasmussen: Romney 44, Gingrich 28, Santorum 12, Paul 10.

Polls: Romney looks strong

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Mitt Romney continues to maintain a solid lead in the race for Florida’s 50 delegates in Tuesday’s winner-take-all Republican presidential primary, according to a new poll.

A Public Policy Polling survey released tonight shows Romney holding steady with an 8-point lead over rival Newt Gingrich.  This result jibes with most other polls released over the last few days that show Romney with a firm 8-9 point advantage and hovering around 40 percent.

With almost all polls in agreement, it appears that Romney is poised to prevail in Tuesday’s primary, barring an 11th-hour surprise.

Public Policy Polling: Romney 40 percent, Gingrich 32, Rick Santorum 15, Ron Paul 9.
