NEXT FRIDAY — South Fort Myers hosts Bradenton Southeast in a Class 3A semifinal game. Island Coast hosts Davie University High in a Class 2B semifinal.

South Fort Myers 28, Naples 21 (FINAL)

In this clash of unbeatens, South goes up first with an 84-yard TD pass from Dallas Crawford to Devon Wrenn with about 5:30 left in the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles get on the board thanks to a 37-yard FG from Okubo.

Okubo connects again, this time on a 26-yard FG, to pull Naples within one.

Crawford threw his second TD pass of the night, a 32-yarder to Clemson recruit Sammy Watkins to make it 14-6 with 6:22 left in the first half.

Naples scored its first TD on a 6-yard pass from Travis Carlyle to Manny Morgan. The pair again connected on a 2-point conversion pass to tie the game at 14.

Michigan recruit Dallas Crawford completed a 9-yard pass to Sammy Watkins to make it 21-14 South with 8 minutes in the 4Q.

Travis Carlyle scored on a 5-yard run after some craziness at Staver Field. South stopped Naples on the 3-yard line on fourth and goal, but then coughed it up on a fumble to give Naples the ball back on South’s 5-yard line allowing Carlyle to score and tie the game.

Crawford connects with Watkins on a 72-yard TD pass to put South up 28-21 with 1:59 left in the game.

Island Coast 42, Lake Highland 21 (FINAL)

The Gators took an early 13-0 lead on a 12-yard rush by Mario Pender that was immediately followed by an interception, returned for a TD by Jimmy Stewart. The PAT kick after Stewart’s TD was blocked.

Pender went 50 yards to score the Gators third TD of the night. IC rushed for the 2-point conversion making it 21-7 Gators.

Lewis King scored IC’s fourth TD on an 8-yard rush.

Nelson Candelario scored on a 71-yard rush to make it 35-7 Island Coast.

Lake Highland answered back on a quick, 75-yard TD pass.

Charlotte 7, Cape Coral 0 (FINAL)

Charlotte RB Mike Bellamy, a Clemson recruit, has been held in check with less than 20 rushing yards midway through the first quarter. The Seahawks’ defense has been dominant, putting pressure on the Tarpons QB (including a sack), and plugging up holes that Bellamy would typically exploit. Charlotte has amassed just 22 total yards of offense in the first quarter.

Cape has thrown back-to-back interceptions, including one just as the first quarter concluded.

Despite giving up two interceptions, Cape has held Bellamy to just 51 yards in the first half of play.

Cape QB Greenwell threw his third TD of the game early in the third quarter.

Bellamy rushed into the end zone untouched to put Charlotte on the board with 7 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Bellamy rushed for 49 yards and what looked like a TD, only to have the officials call it a fumble at the 1-yard line. Cape recovers, but can’t score. Charlotte wins 7-0.

1. Sammy Watkins in the Wildcat? South coach Grant Redhead waited until the playoffs to reveal that offensive wrinkle and it could be the tipping point in next week’s showdown with unbeaten Naples. The Golden Eagles defense is tough, but a notch below Barron Collier’s. South should be able to score points – 24 should be the goal. The question is can the Wolfpack’s defensive front stop Manny Morgan and Steven Williams? If not, Naples will be content to bleed the clock and keep the South offense on the sidelines.

2. No local team has a better shot to reach the state title game than Island Coast. First of all, the Gators are a supersized 2B school, much closer in population to 4A. Second, Island Coast won’t have to travel until the championship game in Orlando. Third, they have the best defensive line in the state bar none. Aaron Lynch gets most of the headline but tackles Bryan and Scott Bosworth were downright dominating against Tampa Catholic, making it impossible for the Crusaders to run up the middle. Florida commit Hunter Joyer, ranked the No. 1 fullback in the nation by rivals, had just 9 yards on 6 carries, 11 of which came late in the fourth quarter. If the Gators can continue to get big plays on offense from Nelson Candelario, Louis King and Willie Fleming while the opposing defense focuses on shutting down Mario Pender, Island Coast will be playing for the 2B title.

3. Nobody’s giving Cape Coral much of a chance against 11-0 Charlotte. Remember though, the Seahawks already showed they can shut down a premier running back, holding Pender under 100 yards when they met Island Coast this season. The key will be can the Cape OL give quarterback Bryan Greenwell enough time to get the ball downfield to Prince Holloway and Jovan Ojeda? Also, don’t discount sophomore RB T.J. Johnson. He’s no Mike Bellamy but he’s shown an ability to be explosive and the Seahawks need him to deliver three big plays if they have any chance at pulling the upset. The Tarpons handled Cape easily last year and are looking to a rematch with Armwood on Dec. 3. If the Seahawks can jump on Charlotte early, they could be the team playing in December.

GAME OF THE WEEK

BARRON COLLIER (8-2) AT SOUTH FORT MYERS (9-0)

n What to watch for — Barron Collier: This is a Region 3A-3 quarterfinal. The Cougars had their best offensive output of the season in last week’s 28-7 win over Gulf Coast, gaining 438 total yards — 359 on the ground. Senior QB Julio Gomez is the team’s primary weapon on offense, rushing for 995 yards and 9 TDs. He’s completed just 42 percent of his passes for 457 yards and 5 TDs. “You have to guard against the run so much with him, that it does open up some things in the passing game,” South Fort Myers coach Grant Redhead said. “But he’s a runner first. His legs are his biggest asset.” Defensively, the Cougars are led by the two Joeys — senior DL Joey Puopolo (57 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries) and senior LB Joey Lohmann (138 tackles, 4 interceptions). “The whole defense runs to the ball,” Redhead said. “They’re always going 100 miles and hour. You don’t see any duds out there.” South Fort Myers: The production of senior QB Dallas Crawford and senior WR Sammy Watkins dropped off a bit this season, but only because the Wolfpack didn’t need as much from them. South trailed in just one game all season — 3-0 to Fort Myers — before rolling to a 43-10 win. Still, Crawford (1,464 yards, 17 TDs, 1 INT, 75% completion rate) became Lee County’s all-time leading passer and needs to 459 more passing yards to become the third QB in Florida history to pass for 8,000 career yards. But it’s what Crawford does on the other side of the ball at DB (46 tackles, 8 INTs) that concerns Barron Collier coach Mark Ivey. “He’s probably a more high impact player sitting in the middle of the defense,” Ivey said. “He blows people up and does a great job of baiting you to throw the ball, then picks you off.” Meanwhile, Watkins (36 catches, 849 yards, 10 TDs) broke Lee County’s all-time receiving yards record and is a threat to score from anywhere on the field.

n The News-Press pick: South Fort Myers 28, Barron Collier 14

TAMPA CATHOLIC (5-5) AT ISLAND COAST (9-1)

n Radio: WMYR-AM (1410)

n What to watch for — Tampa Catholic: This a Region 2B-3 semifinal. The Crusaders graduated 27 seniors from last year’s 11-2 team, which advanced to the Class 2B state title game, losing to Jacksonville Bolles 21-7. After dropping their first four games of 2010, Tampa Catholic rebounded to win five of its final six. An extremely balanced team on offense, the Crusaders are averaging 309 yards of offense per game (152.9 passing, 156.1 rushing). Freshman QB Chivarsky Corbett has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns, with just one interception. Senior RB/LB Hunter Joyner, a Florida State commit, leads Tampa Catholic with 496 yards and 5 TDs. Island Coast: The Gators have beaten just one foe with a winning record in 2010, handing Cape Coral its only loss of the season. Island Coast’s dominating defense surrendered just 40 points all season, led by the area’s most impressive defensive line — senior Jimmy Stewart (10.5 sacks), senior Aaron Lynch (34 tackles, 7.5 sacks) and senior brothers Scott and Bryan Bosworth. Junior RB Delmarick ‘Mario’ Pender supplied much of the team;s offense this season, rushing for 1,928 yards and 28 TDs. He needs just 72 yards to become the seventh Lee County running back to reach the 2,000-yard mark.

n The News-Press pick: Island Coast 22, Tampa Catholic 13

Palmetto (6-4) at Cape Coral (9-1)

n What to watch for — Palmetto: This is a Region 4A-3 quarterfinal. The Tigers were the District 4A-11 runner-up, losing 46-13 to Charlotte and beating Port Charlotte 31-27 and Lakewood Ranch 28-14. Palmetto has won four straight games, including the victory over Lakewood Ranch two weeks ago to secure a postseason berth. RBs Marquis Green and De’quan Reddick lead the Tigers, who are looking for their first postseason win since a Class 3A region quarterfinal victory in 2007. Cape Coral: After spending the season overcoming an array of injuries, the Seahawks suffered one or two against Lehigh last week that may cost them a couple starters. Cape Coral coach Brad Metheny said Palmetto has the size to handle his District 4A-12 champion team, but the speed is unknown. “I can’t tell on film. That’s what we’re going to find out Friday night,” Metheny said. Both teams will probably look to establish the run, but the game may come down to strong-armed senior QB Bryan Greenwell, who has capitalized on Cape Coral’s litany of weapons to the tune of 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns but has been wild at times this season. Using the common opponent measuring stick, Cape Coral beat Port Charlotte 38-24 and Gulf Coast 44-14. Palmetto beat Gulf Coast 37-19.

n The News-Press pick: Cape Coral 24, Palmetto 16

Tampa Robinson (8-2) at Immokalee (5-5)

n What to watch for —Robinson: This is a Region 2A-3 semifinal. The Knights are ranked No. 7 in the Class 2A state poll. They are playing on the road because they lost 29-28 to District 2A-5 champion Tampa Jesuit, who is ranked No.3 in the state. Robinson’s only other loss was last week’s 40-21 setback to Tampa Plant, who is ranked No. 7 in Class 5A. The Knights are led by senior RB J.J. Hubbard, who has rushed for 1,156 yards this season and is receiving attention from Division I schools. He has rushed for more than 125 yards on five different occasions this season. Last season, Robinson lost in the state semifinals to Glades Central. Immokalee: The Indians are back in the state playoffs for the first time since 2007. Immokalee knocked off previously unbeaten Miami Dade Christian, who was ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, 35-28 last week. That was the Indians’ second straight win as they topped Estero 38-23 to win District 2A-6 two weeks ago. Sophomore QB Tshumbi Johnson has passed for 1,757 yards and 15 TDs this season while throwing seven interceptions. Johnson must avoid turning the ball over against Robinson’s athletic, opportunistic defense. The last time the Indians played in the Class 2A state playoffs was 2004 when they won the school’s lone state title.

n The News-Press pick: Tampa Robinson 30, Immokalee 14

Riverdale (6-4) at Naples (10-0)

n What to watch for — Riverdale: This is a Region 3A-3 quarterfinal. Despite losing junior QB Jeff Colton, Riverdale has won two games with backup Anthony Snyder. He threw two TD passes last week in a 31-11 win over LaBelle. “Not bad for a sophomore with no varsity experience,” Riverdale coach Rob Hinson said. “He’s learning on the run and that’s difficult. Now, his third game will be Naples at Naples.” To take the pressure off Snyder, Riverdale needs to be able run the ball. Junior RB Levi Sourinha is coming off a 222-yard game. “They will blitz off the edge and they mix up their coverages pretty well,” Hinson said. “We have try to find ways to move the ball.” Naples: Even though the Eagles have their third unbeaten regular season under coach Bill Kramer and have a potential second-round game with unbeaten South Fort Myers looming, Kramer said not making the playoffs last season has kept his players level-headed and grounded. “I don’t think anybody is looking ahead,” he said. Opponents who think stopping one or two Golden Eagles will slow the team’s offense would be mistaken. “We’ve had 18 players score touchdowns this year,” Kramer said. “I’ve never heard of that before.”

n The News-Press pick: Naples 38, Riverdale 10

GULF COAST (3-7) at CHARLOTTE (10-0)

n What to watch for — Gulf Coast: This is a Region 4A-3 quarterfinal. The Sharks have had to deal with plenty of adversity in 2010. Rookie coach Andrew Miranti has helped his team get over the loss of long-time coach Frank Tudryn — who lost his battle with cancer last spring — and the numerous injuries and lack of execution that has plagued this team. To have any chance of pulling an upset, the offense must be on the field for large chunks of the game. RB Sebastian Zuluaga has been a bright spot with four 100-yard rushing games this season. Charlotte: Is this the year the Tarpons finally make it to state? Two straight years they have lost in the regional finals, but the 2010 team may have what it takes. Undefeated and ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, they have outscored the opposition 435-69. The potent offense starts with one of the best running backs in the state, senior Mike Bellamy. The Clemson recruit has rushed for 1,924 yards in 10 games. Slowing him down will be a challenge, but coach Binky Waldrop’s team is not one-dimensional. Senior WR Alex Mut (South Florida commit) has 529 yards receiving and 6 TDs.

n The News-Press pick: Charlotte 42, Gulf Coast 7

DUNBAR (4-6) at ORLANDO LAKE HIGHLAND PREP (8-2)

n What to watch for — Dunbar: This is a Region 2B- 3 semifinal. Coach Phil Vogt has his team in the playoffs for the third straight year. The Tigers season can be characterized as frustrating. Injuries and illness have led to inconsistent outings, but then the team surprises with stellar efforts against Island Coast and Clewiston. The defense that held Island Coast to 10 points will have to show up in Orlando. Offensively they must find a way to get freshman WR ReyShene Bronson involved. The running game has been stagnant this season, but the big plays have come from the passing game, which Bronson snagged seven passes for 102 yards last week in a 41-0 loss to East Lee County. Lake Highland Prep: The Highlanders are highly motivated after blowing a 13-point lead in their season finale to Orlando Bishop Moore. Veteran coach Tim Borcky has the program in the playoffs for the 15th time in the last 18 years and last season, Lake Highland blanked Island Coast 28-0 in the opening round. The best players on the field might not be at the skill positions. Senior C/NT Eric Thoni, who is 6-foot-2 and 275-pounds, was named the district player of the year and P/K Michael Rasmussen is a game-changer.

n The News-Press pick: Lake Highland Prep 31, Dunbar 8

ST. PETERSBURG ADMIRAL FARRAGUT (8-1) at EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN (9-1)

n What to watch for — Admiral Farragut: This is a Region 1B-3 semifinal. The Blue Jackets will be the most athletic team that ECS has played in 2010. QB Rayshawn Jenkins is the reigning Class A 110-hurdle champion and adds a multi-dimensional flair through the air and on the ground. A stellar defense has posted four shutouts and has only allowed 51 points in nine games. LB Chris Myrick is a top player on any level and will need to be blocked consistently. ECS: The Sentinels have rattled off nine-straight victories, after dropping the season opener to Bishop Verot and junior QB Jordan Phillips is a big part of the winning ways. The LaBelle transfer has ran for 1,126 yards and 16 TDs since replacing the injured Tyler Viens. He has rarely made poor decisions with the football and that will be the key against Admiral Farragut. Coach Brian Lynch has been extremely pleased with his team’s focus on the little details that will be a huge key to success in the playoffs.

n The News-Press pick: ECS 27, Admiral Farragut 24
