Island Coast’s Lynch commits to FSU
Tuesday, November 16th, 2010South FM, Naples continue rise up state poll
Tuesday, November 16th, 2010South Fort Myers and Naples continue to creep up the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s state poll, with the Wolfpack moving up one spot to No. 17, while the Golden Eagles move up one to No. 18. If these teams win their first-round playoff games on Friday, they will meet on Friday, Nov. 26 to decide on the field who is better.
St. Thomas Aquinas continues their top spot in the poll, but the Raiders no longer hold a commanding lead. Manatee, which defeated St. Thomas in the state semi-finals last year, has closed the gap to within sixteen points. The Hurricanes are #2 and picked up one first place vote. Right behind them is 2A Cocoa. The Tigers jumped up a spot from #4 to #3 and are just one point behind Manatee. Armwood (4A) remains fourth followed by Dr. Phillips(6A), which is fifth, replacing Dwyer (4A).
Dwyer slipped to sixth, followed by Pensacola (3A), Miami Central (6A) Tampa Jefferson (3A) and Miami Columbus (6A).

GAME OF THE WEEK
BISHOP VEROT (5-3, 1-3) AT FORT MYERS (4-5, 1-3)
n Radio: WMYR-AM (1410)
n What to watch for — Bishop Verot: This is a District 3A-11 game. Both the Vikings and the Green Wave have been eliminated from the FHSAA state playoffs. However, this should still be a spirited contest between the two schools, who are meeting on the gridiron for just the second time. Bishop Verot defeated Fort Myers 19-14 last season. The Vikings ended a two-game district losing skid last week by downing North Fort Myers 25-7. Senior QB Jake Kistel is averaging 223 passing yards per game and has thrown 9 touchdown passes. Senior WR Matt Brewer is Kistel’s favorite target, with 40 catches for 733 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Bishop Verot defense has also been solid, especially against the run, thanks largely to the play of linebackers Jon Alvarez and Paul Cecere. Fort Myers: The Green Wave turned in their best offensive performance of the season last week in a 35-16 win over Mariner. Fort Myers rushed for a 317 yards behind junior RB Dalvin Battle (game-high 154 yards) and senior RB Quinton Smith (149 yards, 3 touchdowns). The Green Wave also got two touchdown passes from sophomore QB T.J. Douglas, both to senior WR James Whitfield (3 catches, 88 yards). Fort Myers would like nothing better than to secure a .500 season with its first-ever win over Bishop Verot.
n The News-Press pick: Fort Myers 24, Bishop Verot 21
