All games at 7:30 p.m. unless noted

GAME OF THE WEEK

LELY (2-2, 1-0) AT LEHIGH (3-1, 0-1)
What to watch for — Lely: This is a District 3A-12 game. The Trojans held on to beat Golden Gate 26-25 last week in their district opener. Senior QB Patrick Lane was instrumental in that win as he had a hand in three of Lely’s four touchdowns and had 230 yards of total offense. Lehigh: Last year’s contest against Lely was the game that turned things around for Lehigh. The Lightning were trailing late in the fourth quarter and pulled out a come-from-behind victory. That was beginning of a five-game 3A-12 winning streak that propelled Lehigh to a runner-up spot and eventually the Region 3A-3 final. Lehigh lost to Barron Collier 21-14 last Friday. “We got up and we didn’t stay on them,” coach Pete Fominaya said of Barron Collier. “(This week is) a situation where we have to get positive results.”
The News-Press pick: Lehigh 21, Lely 16

Quarterbacks go down

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Bishop Verot quarterback Jake Kistel has been knocked out of the Vikings’ game against South Fort Myers after he took a hard hit from Wolfpack DB Dallas Crawford at 7:33 of the third quarter.

ECS quarterback Tyler Viens left his team’s game midway through the second quarter of the Sentinels’ game against Moore Haven with a shoulder injury. The initial diagnosis is a broken collarbone, but he’ll have to wait for X-rays for the official word. Former LaBelle QB Jordan Phillips, who transferred to ECS this year, has taken over behind center.

Pender at it again

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Island Coast’s Delmarick Pender is at it again. After going for 344 yards and five touchdowns last week, Pender has 178 yards and two scores early in the second quarter vs. Clewiston.

Pender finished with 256 yards rushing and 4 TDs on just 13 carries.

Lehigh-Barron Collier all about defense

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Neither team was able to gain more than 7 yards on any play through the first 18 minutes of their game. That ended when Lehigh’s Curtavious Thornton broke one for 53 yards for the game’s only score midway through the 2nd quarter.

Lehigh did not convert the extra point to lead only 6-0.
