Just hours after having the Assistant State Attorney in the 4th Judicial Circuit dropped domestic violence charges against him, Barron Collier defensive coordinator Johnny Smith was back on the Cougar’s sidelines calling plays for his team against South Fort Myers in Naples tonight.
“As such, Mr. Smith has been cleared to his teaching and coaching duties effective immediately,” said Allun Hamblett, Collier County’s Deputy Chief Administrative Officer.
Smith was greeted on the field before the game with hugs by players.
Emotions for fans who attended the game ranged from anger to joy to empathy to relief.
“They were so anxious to put somebody in jail before they got the whole facts of the case,” said Jorge Velazquez, whose son Alex played at Barron Collier. “I think he got a really raw deal and the sheriff’s department acted rash in taking him into custody.”
Pete Pietri, attending the game with Velazquez and his wife Beth, added, “It stains his name. That’s not nice.”
Beth Velazquez said she thinks Smith will be OK because, “Coach has strong faith. He’s very calm.”
