Charlotte holds off Cape Coral

Friday, November 27th, 2009

One of the best football seasons in school history came to a halt Friday night for Cape Coral High.
The Seahawks fell to the Charlotte Tarpons 24-16 in the Region 4A-3 semifinals, the second round of the state playoffs, in front of a crowd of about 4,000 fans.
Charlotte defeated Cape Coral 44-0 during the spring game, but Cape Coral pushed that meaningless loss aside on its way to winning 10 consecutive regular season games for the second time in school history, finishing the year with an 11-1 record.
Charlotte improved to 11-1 and will play host to Seffner Armwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the regional championship. Armwood defeated Largo 49-3.
“The higher you go, the harder you fall,” said Cape Coral coach Mike Goebbel. “We got pretty far up on the ladder. It’s a long way down.”
This Cape Coral team had perhaps six Division I prospects on the roster. One of them, University of Florida-bound Jaylen Watkins, walked off the field alone afterward.
Watkins, the team’s senior starting quarterback, completed 11-of-17 passes for 160 yards and no interceptions. He rushed 11 times for 37 yards.
Also playing cornerback — his projected position in college — Watkins helped provide blanket coverage on Charlotte’s leading receiver, Alex Mut, who did not have a catch.
But Watkins lost three fumbles on offense, one of which led to a Charlotte touchdown.
“He’s taking it hard,” Cape Coral senior tailback Jeremy Davis said of Watkins. “It’s nothing but a game. It’s bad, but I’ll just have to move on.”
Davis had 15 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns with his brother, Detroit Lions cornerback Phillip Buchanon, watching from the sidelines.
But because of the turnovers, Davis could not get the kind of continuity that his counterpart could in Bellamy.
Bellamy rushed 28 times for 165 yards, including three touchdown runs of 3, 2 and 12 yards. Bellamy set up one of his three touchdowns with a 33-yard catch from senior quarterback Kyle Midgett. Bellamy finished with two catches for 60 yards.
“We had some turnovers early in the game that helped us,” Charlotte coach Binky Waldrop said. “They’re a great football team. They’re well coached, and they were playing some good football. They have so much speed.
“This time of year, you’re going to see speed like that every Friday night. I thought our guys did a great job getting to their backs.”
Cape Coral made it a one possession game to tie the score with four minutes and 43 seconds remaining. Davis scored on a 1-yard run, making it 24-16, capping a 10-play, 60-yard drive that took three minutes and 47 seconds off the clock.
At that point, the game turned into a keep-away contest. Charlotte won that contest — and the game — by running nine consecutive running plays that took the clock down to zero.
“We did not want them to get the ball back,” Waldrop said.

ODA 32, ECS 18 FINAL

Friday, November 27th, 2009

ECS junior Joseph Hartmann jumped on an ODA fumbled snap and ECS took over at the ODA 12-yard line. Three plays later, Rawson scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to put ECS up 18-17. The 2-point conversion run again failed.

ODA opened the half with a long drive but managed just a 25-yard field goal by kicker Jeff Young after running into issues with penalties deep in ECS territory. The Sentinels responded with a long touchdown drive that was capped by Veins’ 2-yard touchdown run. Rawson was stuffed on a 2-point conversion run. ODA is beginning to look a little tired on the field.

The Sentinels got on the board when senior running back Sean Rawson scored on a 1-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 8:12 left in the second quarter. ODA struck right back with a long drive that came up short when quarterback Brian Ragone fumbled the snap on the ECS 2-yard line and ECS senior Brett Knight fell on it. Both teams traded possesions before going to halftime. ODA gets the ball first in the second half. ECS has shot itself in the foot a bit racking up 55 yards in penalties and losing two fumbles. Colton Lynch still has not left the sideline and sophomore Tyler Veins is taking most of the snaps at quarterback for ECS.

Just as ECS was beginning to get in a rhythm, sophomore receiver Colby Lynch slipped on a screen pass attempt. Junior quarterback Matthew Schappell’s pass was backwards and ODA sophomore linebacker Grant McCarthy scooped it up and took it 47 yards for a touchdown. ODA leads 14-0 with 1:19 remaining in the first quarter.

After ECS fumbled a snap, ODA took a 7-0 lead after sophomore quarterback Brian Ragone connected with brother and junior wide receiver Chris Ragone on a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Lehigh is facing a third-and-14 at the 50 with 52 seconds left in the first half.

South’s drive stalls; Lehigh will start on its 39 with 3:12 left in the first half.

Strange sequence of events. South holds Lehigh than Watkins blocks a 20-yard FG attempt. But he is called for roughing the kicker. Overstreet score son the next play on a 2-yard run to put the Lightning up 14-7 with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

Lehigh goes three-and-out but Crawford touches the bouncing punt. It’s recovered by Lehigh’s Issac Crawford at the South 4.

Overstreet scores on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 7 with 54 seconds left in the first quarter.

Lehigh’s favorite dance teacher – Melissa Davis-Booth – visits the press box. Lightning QB Larry Overstreet immediately breaks a 26-yard run. Coincidence?

Lehigh’s Derrick Wells runs 26 yards on a fake punt to keep the Lightning drive alive.

Lehigh holds and will start its second series at its own 25. There is 8:25 left in the first quarter.

The Lightning go three-and-out. South will start at the Lehigh 48.

Lehigh starts on its own 20.

What a great timeout. South QB Dallas Crawford hits Sammy Watkins on a 92-yard TD reception on the first offensive play of the game. The Wolfpack lead 7-0 just 19 seconds into the game.

South uses its first timeout because it had 12 men on the field. There is 11:53 left in the first quarter.

South starts on its own 8-yard line after a holding penalty .

Lehigh running back Darius Hogan will not play tonight. He injured his knee late in last week’s win over Riverdale.

Maybe it’s the cold but it’s definitely a late arriving crowd here at Lehigh. South has won the toss and will receive. Kickoff is about 5 minutes away.

Cape Coral Without Offensive Weapon

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Cape Coral senior running back Spencer Boyd will not play tonight. The Notre Dame recruit will sit out his second straight game due to a knee injury. He should be able to return next week if Cape Coral advances.

ECS’ Lynch dressed for 1B-3 Final

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Evangelical Christian senior quarterback Colton Lynch is dressed for the Sentinels’ Region 1B-3 final game against Sarasota Out-of-Door at Sarasota High School.

Lynch, junior Matthew Schappell and sophomore Tyler Veins all took snaps at quarterback in warmups for ECS.

Lynch took a helmet to the knee last week in ECS’ 38-31 win over Lakeland Victory Christian. He missed practice time this week because of the bruise.

Lynch has 3,174 total yards of offense on the season and has 42 total touchdowns in 11 games.

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Evangelical Christian School senior quarterback Colton Lynch may not play in Friday’s Region B-3 Final against Sarasota Out-of-Door at Sarasota High at 7:30 p.m.

Lynch took a helmet to the knee when ECS topped Lakeland Victory Christian last week 38-31 in a B-3 semifinal game and has a bruise that severely limits movement.

ECS coach Brian Lynch, Colton’s father, said that the Sentinels are preparing like he will not be able to play. (more…)
