Friday night recaps

Naples continued its mastery over Barron Collier. Island Coast stunned Dunbar. South Fort Myers stakes its claim as Lee County’s top team. Ida Baker and Cape Coral claim postseason berths. Those were just some of the storylines that came out of week 8 high school football action.

Some big performances on the field tonight

Southwest Florida players were piling up the yards and points in games tonight.

North Fort Myers’ Tre Boston compiled 282 yards on the ground with four touchdowns agianst Mariner. He also threw for a touchdown and had an interception.

Ida Baker quarterback Sean Francis  had touchdown passes of 25, 3 and 10 yards and added an 18-yard TD run in the Bulldogs’ 28-7 win over Palmetto Ridge. That win clinched Baker’s first playoff berth in the program’s five-year history.

Island Coast stuns Dunbar

The Gators pulled off their biggest win in program history, knocking off District 2B-6 favorite Dunbar at Dunbar 6-2. The win pulls Island Coast, in its first full varsity season, into a four-day tie atop the district at 2-1 with Dunbar, Clewiston and Lake Placid.

First Baptist QB discharged from hospital

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

First Baptist quarterback Corey Todd was injured in his team’s game Friday at Tampa Carrollwood Day and taken off the field on a stretcher. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, but was discharged later in the evening.

Mariner’s Julien discharged from hospital

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

InjuryMariner defensive back Jerran Julien suffered an injury in the Tritons’ game against North Fort Myers  Friday night after being a part of a gang tackle on a pass play. He was transported by ambulance to Health Park after remaining on the field for nearly 20 minutes. He was discharged later Friday night.

Fort Myers inducting 2009 football Hall class

Five former players will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Friday night before the Green Wave play the South Fort Myers Wolfpack at Edison Stadium.

Schoenfeld back under center for Cougars

Barron Collier will welcome back senior quarterback Mark Schoenfeld for this Friday’s District 3A-12 showdown against visiting Naples.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior sprained the ACL in his right knee on Sept. 25 during a 42-18 win over Lehigh.

Despite missing the past two games, Schoenfeld still leads the Cougars in total offense (827 yards). He’s rushed for 354 yards and 6 TDs and passed for  473 yards and 6 TDs.

Playoffs! Playoffs?

The postseason has not yet arrived in high school football, but if Fort Myers or Estero wants to get there, both essentially face must-win games this week after the Green Wave defeated the Wildcats 33-11 last Friday.
Fort Myers (3-4, 1-1) hosts South Fort Myers (7-0, 2-0) in a District 3A-11 game, while Estero (1-6, 0-1) entertains Hardee (5-0, 1-0) in a District 2A-6 encounter.

Did any of these surprise you? Lely knocking off Naples in overtime was a stunner. South Fort Myers improved to 7-0 by doubling up Baker 40-20, while Riverdale got its revenge against Dunbar 42-21. You can watch a replay of Riverdale’s win by clicking here.
