The pupil tops the mentor

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Lehigh coach Pete Fominaya was hired to take over the Lightning this season because of his experience as an assistant coach with Naples High. Fominaya obviously learned how to win well.

The Lightning (4-4, 4-1) all but knocked Naples (5-3, 3-2) out of the playoffs with a convincing 34-14 District 3A-12 win. They also set themselves up for a playoff spot after starting the season 0-4.

If Lehigh beats 0-8 Cypress Lake next week, it is in no matter what. Lehigh will also be scoreboard watching and rooting for Lely next Friday. If Lely (4-1 district) beats Barron Collier (4-1 district), Lehigh will win the district title by the fact that it beat Lely earlier in the season. If Barron Collier wins, it’ll take the district because it beat Lehigh earlier in the season.

Speaking of scoreboard watching, Naples needs Barron Collier to beat Lely and Lehigh to lose to Cypress Lake next week to have any chace at a playoff spot. All four teams would be 4-2 in the district. Naples beat Barron Collier, but lost to Lely and Lehigh, so those teams hold the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles.

Island Coast has record night

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Island Coast set a number of school records with its 66-6 win over Gateway Charter Friday.

The Gators set the record for scoring margin, rush yards (418), total yards (502), rush yards allowed (-30) and total yards allowed (44). And that’s after allowing a 70-yard touchdown pass on the game’s first play.

Congratulations to ECS

Evangelical Christian ventured up to Bradenton Christian and knocked off their guests 28-7. Couple that with Bradenton St. Stephen’s 38-15 win over St. John Neumann 38-15 and ECS (7-1, 3-1 district) wrapped up second place in District 1B-6 and its automatic playoff berth.

Sarasota Out-of-Door Academy (7-1, 4-0) previously beat ECS and Bradenton Christian and knocked off Moore Haven tonight to clinch the district title.

“We’re in a situation where it’s getting late in the season and with a smaller team like we have, and as most 1B teams have, we can spend the next few weeks getting everyone healthy and able to go in the playoffs full speed,” ECS coach Brian Lynch said.

ECS will face the District 1B-5 champion, which will either be Admiral Farrragut or Victory Christian, Nov. 20.

Although Riverdale-South Fort Myers Thursday night was the marquee game of the week, there are plenty of other big matchups on tap for Friday night.

This most pivotal may be in District 3A-12 with Naples traveling to Lehigh. The loser of this game will miss the playoffs. The winner will still have a chance to win the district title. The teams are 3-1 in district play.

ECS wins $2,500 in football video contest

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Colton Lynch’s moves have earned his high school some serious money.

A video of the Evangelical Christian School quarterback juking multiple defenders and finding his way into the end zone against Moore Haven earlier this fall earned the school $2,500 from State Farm Insurance Companies. The ECS video was one of 25 winners from around the country in the first half of Friday Night Feats, a national video contest on YouTube highlighting the biggest moments from this year’s high school football season.

ECS is in the running for a $15,000 grand prize. As of Thursday, the ECS video had more than 11,900 views, almost twice the number of hits of any of its video competition. (more…)

Disgust.

That feeling consumes junior quarterback Dallas Crawford every time he walks into the South Fort Myers High football locker room and sees two numbers on the team’s whiteboard: “31-15.”
That represents the score of last season’s matchup with Riverdale — a crushing defeat that ensured that the Wolfpack would miss the playoffs, despite finishing 8-2.

Baker’s tough past makes playoff berth special

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Brian Conn didn’t have to think back too far to remember the lean times for Baker High School football; it was only a few years ago.

Winless in the first and second seasons of the school’s five-year history, the Bulldogs clinched their first playoff berth last week with a 28-7 victory at Palmetto Ridge.

“I’m very happy for them and all the hard work they put in through the hard times,” Conn said of the seniors at Baker, which went 6-4 in season three and 5-5 last year without making the postseason.

“To make it to this point is very exciting. The first years were rough. We weren’t given much of a chance with the schedule and being thrown into a district right away with no upperclassmen. But our kids persevered, and the kids had faith and belief in the school and the community to still continue to come (to Baker).”

Florida Christian was scheduled to play at Oakland Park Performing Arts Christian on Friday, but that school has cancelled its season, so FCI was awarded the win via forfeit. That improves the Eagles’ record to 4-4 on the year.
