Naples’ Nick Alajajian earns (no) stripes at UF

Nick Alajajian, an offensive lineman from Naples, and Stephen Alli, a 6-foot-6 receiver , were among the first freshmen to get the stripe taken off their helmet at Florida on Friday.

It’s a tradition Urban Meyer started, for freshmen to show they belong and get the stripe off.

Mariner to rededicate Tony McKenna Field

Mariner High School will rededicate its football field in commemorating the 20th anniversary of Tony McKenna’s death.

McKenna, a linebacker on the 1989 team, was struck and killed by lightning on Sept. 5, 1989 while outside after a practice had ended. (more…)

Colton Lynch ready to lead ECS

Evangelical Christian quarterback Colton Lynch is ready for his senior season.

Lynch rushed for over 1,300 yards last season and passed for 683. He will lead a Sentinel team that lost just four seniors off a team that went 7-4 and made the state playoffs. (more…)

Mariner’s Mitchell commits to Ole Miss

Mariner High School football player Eric Mitchell has verbally committed to the University of Mississippi.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Mitchell, who gained 787 yards and scored 10 touchdowns as a running back for the Tritons last season, is projected to play defensive back for the Rebels. Mitchell recorded 18 total tackles and had two interceptions at cornerback for Mariner in 2008.

ESPN releases HS football TV schedule

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to air 21 live  high school football games this season. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas, Venice, Lakeland, Miami Northwestern and Miami Central will be among the teams broadcast. (more…)

Cape Coral Christian starts JV program

Cape Coral Christian School will field a junior varsity football team this season.

The Crusaders have 22 players, six of which will be playing offense and defense. Coach Mike Curtis, 33, helped establish the program midway through the last school year at the behest of his students who wanted the opportunity to play high school ball. (more…)
