South FM shows big-play ability

With 4:19 left in the third quarter South Fort Myers has run just 15 offensive plays to Barron Collier’s 60 in their preseason classic. No matter, South leads 34-31.

Wolfpack junior quarterback Dallas Crawford completed 4 of 5 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns n the first half, including a 67-yard scoring strike to Samuel Watkins. Crawford and Watkins also connected on a 55-yard pass to set up another score.

LaBelle’s QB down with injury

LaBelle sophomore quarterback Jordan Phillips remained on the field after being sacked with 1:28 left in the second quarter of the Cowboys’ preseason classic game against Immokalee.

The game was delayed five minutes and paramedics were called onto the field. An athletic trainer said Phillips may have suffered a concussion. (more…)

Dunbar’s Jones not playing

Dunbar’s starting running back Jorvonte Jones is wearing his jersey over street clothes tonight instead of playing in the Tigers’ preseason classic game tonight against North Fort Myers.

Collier school district cancels preseason game fearing swine flu

The School District of Collier County has canceled Lely High School’s preseason football game against Tampa Catholic on Friday, after the district learned that as many as 10 of the Tampa Catholic players are suspected to have H1N1 influenza, swine flu. The game is not expected to be rescheduled. (more…)

Jammi German hired as new East Lee AD

Jammi German, considered by some to be the best high school athlete ever in Lee County (sorry Deion Sanders and Noel Devine), has a new job now.

Tony Dungy’s movie out Tuesday night at Bell Tower

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy has spearheaded a new documentary geared toward high school football players.

Red Zone 09 features commentary and advice from Colts QB Peyton Manning, RB Joseph Addai, S Bob Sanders, TE Dallas Clark, retired Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Irvin and USC coach Pete Carroll among others.

The movie will air Tuesday night at three Southwest Florida movie theaters. This is a one-night and one-time only event.

Dungy is serving Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick as a mentor following Vick’s release from prison for dog-fighting.

Barron Collier alum Williams given preseason honor

Former Barron Collier football player Greg Williams has been named Rivals.com Preseason Second Team Big East.

The redshirt sophomore is expected to start at SAM linebacker for the Panthers this season after making 47 tackles last season. (more…)

Former Verot players Thomas, James now Dunbar Tigers
