Poll of the Week: School bus fuel consumption

The federal government’s Cash for Clunkers program was wildly popular this summer, allowing car owners to trade in their gas guzzlers for newer, fuel-efficient models.

School buses weren’t eligible, however.

Lee County’s fleet of school buses averages 7 miles per gallon, not unexpected for a standard 65-passenger bus that weighs 27,500 pounds. Lee school buses will travel 15.75 million miles this year, burning 2.25 million gallons of diesel fuel, so it’s not surprising that the district’s Finance Advisory Committee is looking at fuel efficiency as one means of saving money.

That’s the subject of our POLL OF THE WEEK on news-press.com’s education page; please click the link and cast your vote. And for reference, here’s a LINK to a story that explains the issues at hand (don’t forget your calculator).
